Uplifting and Feel-Good Movies and Film to Get You Back On Track for the Day!

Netflix on a computer screen

Let’s be honest- we all need some help to lift our spirits sometimes and more often than not, a feel-good film can do just the trick. The power that art has over our mood is not to be underestimated and can really help us to feel as though we aren’t alone in our humanity and struggles. Whether it be a documentary or a fictional movie, there is something to be gained from watching something that brings us joy or makes us feel exhilarated and empowered. Of course, simply watching a film is not the answer to our problems, though it can certainly help to give us a dose of inspiration, courage and rapture.

Here are some uplifting films I can recommend:

I Am

A documentary from director Tom Shadyac where philosophers and scientists give their insight on how we can improve the way we live. Tom was inspired to make this film after a cycling accident left him incapacitated. Following his recovery, he felt a renewed sense of purpose and felt a calling to investigate how we can all live a happier life.

In this wonderful documentary, filmmaker Roko Belic takes us on a journey around the world to explore what really makes people happy. From the swamps of Louisiana to the slums of Kolkata, Roko interviews people from all walks of life to give us an insight into the real meaning of happiness.

Planet Earth

This breathtaking series explores our planet with jaw-dropping footage from the deserts to the oceans and everything in between, reinforcing that our Earth is indeed a beautiful place to be.

Notting Hill

This feel-good romantic comedy is guaranteed to warm your heart, as you follow the love story between a humble London bookstore owner (Hugh Grant) and an American movie star (Julia Roberts).

The Pursuit of Happiness

Will Smith takes on the role of a single father in this film which is based on entrepreneur Chris Gardner’s nearly one-year struggle being homeless with his young son, played by Will’s real-life son, Jaden Smith. A truly inspiring tale of determination, resilience and love.

Erin Brockovich

Based on the real-life story of Erin Brockovich and starring Julia Roberts as Erin, this inspiring film shows an incredible woman who achieves victory against the odds by pursuing her purpose.

It’s A Wonderful Life

An angel is sent from heaven to help a depressed businessman by showing him what life would be like if he had never existed. A classic movie with an important message, reminding us of how valuable we all are to the world.

Guaranteed to have you laughing out loud from beginning to end, this British comedy starring Bill Nighy is a tale of unity as we see the LGBT community join forces with the miners to spread a message of equality.

Wonder Woman

There’s nothing like a superhero movie to make you feel as though you can take on the world and in particular Wonder Woman, who discovers her full potential during the war of all wars.

It’s Complicated

This Nancy Meyers’ movie starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin follows the story of a divorced couple who embark on an affair 10 years after their separation. A tale full of laughs and self-discovery, it is bound to make you feel good!

Hector and the Search for Happiness

Disillusioned with the monotony of his life, psychiatrist Hector (played by Simon Pegg) decides to embark on an international journey in order to discover the secret of daily happiness, with the hope he can improve his own life and the lives of his patients.

If you’re ever feeling a bit blue or apathetic and need an injection of positivity, I really hope the films on this list provide you with the encouragement you need to know that you are not alone on your journey and inspire you to move forward with a renewed sense of hope and connection.

Happy watching!
